Ashlynn’s nose stung as she dabbed the tip of her finger on a drop of hot sauce in her plate. “Jerk.”

The guy had done a one-eighty on her—one minute scarfing down chips and salsa and discussing the case with her, the next throwing down his napkin and practically running for the exit.

She sighed and poked her fork at her unfinished taco. He’d probably prefer to work with Sean, too. She’d had no business taking over LA Confidential. She would never reach the heights Sean had reached.

She dropped the fork and squared her shoulders. Stop doing this to yourself, Ashlynn...and eat. Detective Holt wasn’t anything special—arrogant, hostile—and she could see through it all to the part of him that desperately wanted to be a full-fledged homicide detective.

She scooped up her taco and took a big bite with a smile on her face. She’d uncovered a lot more about this case than he had. What had he given her? The pleasure of his company, that’s it. And that hadn’t turned out to be much.

Shoving the rest of the taco in her mouth, she waved to the waitress. “Can you please bring me a box for this burrito?”

“Sure.” She pointed at the money on the table. “Do you want me to take this?”

“Yes.” Ashlynn leaned back against the banquette and patted her full stomach. He’d just paid for her lunch and her dinner.
